Childhood obesity rates in the US continue to rise and we’re beginning to see more and more children suffering from what used to be classified as diseases for “adults” like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Simply put, it is tragic. It it the responsibility of the adults in the lives of these children to do what they can to help prevent these kids from being subjected to these diseases. If adults can’t help these children at home, they need to seek the help of a professional, whether a local doctor/nutritionist or a fat camp.

Well, of course that is easier said than done because in our society everywhere you look there is opportunity to consume foods that cause our children to become overweight. This is especially true for the teenager who has more freedom in deciding what they eat while away from home. Yet still, we must try as parents to motivate our children to lose weight because we don’t want the strains of them being overweight to affect their body and well being.

Being overweight causes the quality of life of kids to suffer in ways that many people are not aware of. Depression rates are higher among overweight kids. Joints and organs are subjected to additional strain and sometimes the production of essential substances like insulin and antibodies is effected. This results in kids gaining more weight as they spend less time being active. Finally, people who are overweight are more likely to suffer from chronic healthy problems as adults, even if they reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Fortunately, preventing childhood obesity is as easy today as it was 30 years ago. Kids can lose weight simply by becoming more active and eating healthier. Of course, implementing these changes can be difficult at home depending on how long bad habits have been permitted. A great way to circumvent the problems often associated with making sudden changes at home is to begin with a weight loss camp for teens. At a camp, kids learn the healthy living habits that they haven’t been implementing at home and learn ways to easily transition them to their home life.
