I am a cynic plain and simple and so I weightloss programs and so if I wanted to make a change I was going to do it my way. This is my three step program to get rid of the blubber.

Step one; First I had to make the decision. It’s all very well thinking about losing weight but just as with everything in life thinking and doing are two completely separate things. I often think about clearing out the garage but it still just a mountain of stuff that gets in the way of whatever it is I’m looking for at any particular time.

Decide that you are going to lose weight. Period. By making that point in your own head you can then prepare to think about how you are going to do it. Cliche that it is, I wanted to go down the diet and exercise route. Losing weight is a numbers game, calories in minus calories out, if the second number is bigger than the first you will lose pounds.

This first step is the most essential because without making a full commitment to the goal you will waver and wander and eventually go back to the same old ways. If you keep on doing the same thing you will get the same result. Decide now. I am going to be different.

The second step was finding a diet program that actually inspired me. I mean ME, in capital letters because everyone is different, they think differently and respond differently to different things. Weight loss programs are different, one person may be inspired but the next person could be completely underwhelmed.

Find the program that grabs you. The internet is great for discovering all sorts of lose weight programs and there will be one that suits you down to the ground. Find it and then do it. Completely and wholeheartedly, just do it, and once you have started don’t be tempted by any other, that will cause you the same grief that you were in before. Clarity breeds serenity.

The third step was a little more problematical, I had a fairly sedentary lifestyle, my main exercise was playing golf on a regular basis. Golf is a time consuming sport and with work and family commitments I really did not want to have to go to a gym or the local health club which would further erode the time I had. On top of that is the cost of membership, which if I didn’t go at least three or four times a week would have been prohibitive.

My secret weapon in the war with the bulge is my treadmill . What a godsend that little beauty is. Set up in the garage I can jump on for forty five minutes every day and just pump that fat away. The real bonus of it is that the whole family can use it, we have little competitions with each other and although it wasn’t particularly cheap it saved me money on the gym fees and more importantly it is so convenient so I don’t skip my exercise.

So my diet program in three steps is make the decision, find a diet program that suits YOU and invest in a treadmill.

First, since having been a child, how many holidays did you celebrate? All of these occasions brought with them friends, relatives, at?tention, love, warmth, and what else? You got it–wall to wall food!

What happened when you ate your peas or cleaned your room? You were rewarded with what? Dessert! Or on Sunday Daddy would pack up the family and take you to? Dairy Queen?

Little wonder your brain often says, “Eat, you’ll feel better; be nice to yourself; it tastes good; you deserve it.”

The Survival Program

When you were a baby and you cried-for most any reason-what was the answer? The bottle, right? Anytime you were frustrated or upset, the bottle was there. The result was that you learned an early association with food and frustration. And when you ate your baby food-especially peas and carrots, you were rewarded with kudos and related food with pleasurable feelings.

Later when you were a toddler, maybe you made an over?ture toward another little boy or girl and were rejected, or you lost or broke a toy, or the teacher yelled at you because you didn’t have your homework, or you didn’t have a date for the first dance, or some other calamity happened, and you ran home crying, “Mommy, Mommy, the world’s coming to an end.” And what did Mommy say? “Come have some milk and cookies. You’ll feel better in a little while.” Sure enough, a little while later you felt better. All this time you have thought it was the cookies and milk, when it was really just the passing of time. No wonder your brain often says, “Eat, you got a lot done today,” or “Eat, you’ve had a rough day,” or “Given all the bull you’ve put up with today, you deserve something,” or “Eat. If you don’t, it’ll get thrown away and you’ll be wasting money,” or “Eat. Be nice to yourself and treat yourself to some?thing good!”

The Result

For many years this was OK. Then at some point you discovered that you had a weight problem. At what age? Seven, fifteen, thirty-five? The age is irrelevant. The first five or six years of your life are the most formative. By the time you realized you had a weight problem and needed to lose weight, you had already been perfectly condi?tioned to eat in response to pleasure and/or survival.

Little wonder then when you feel

  • bored
  • rejected
  • frustrated
  • irritated
  • glad
  • upset
  • excited
  • happy

… your brain suggests having something to eat. The result is the program.

It would seem obvious that all we need do to eliminate emotional eating–stop overeating is to be aware of our emotions and correct the program.

However, because most of us have been trained to deny our feelings, the brain doesn’t say, “Eat, you’re happy.” It says, “Eat because it looks good.” Even when we’re bored, the brain doesn’t say, “eat because you’re bored;” it says, “eat because it would taste good,” or “eat because there’s nothing else to do.”

Because of this, the emphasis is on having an eating problem rather than a problem handling emotions which which are actually a reaction to our nefarious stressors in life. The irony though is that our emotional reactions to stress become stressors in themselves and this is because of our limited experiences in managing emotions. The goal to breaking free from emotional eating is to learn to acknowledge emotions as they are felt–end eating emotional–stop diluting emotions with food.

A progressive approach to losing weight involves asking questions “What is missing here? Why are people not getting the results they are promised? It is clearly insane to keep using the same dieting techniques when the results are so poor. It’s more important to gain a grasp on breaking free from emotional eating than it is to read the scale. Besides focusing on the scale doesn’t empower you to be a better more enlightened person, whereas by focusing on emotional eating produces results. Choose lean cuts of meat, and minimize salt and rich sauces during cooking. And while you do need carbohydrates, take in moderation. But the most important thing to remember is that before you go on any diet during pregnancy consult your obstetrician-gynaecologist. She or he can properly determine the best course of action given your particular medical history and the condition of your baby. Do not go on any weight management program without the advice and the approval of your doctor.
